Who are we?
Antigone is a youth-led non-profit organization that strives to work toward gender equality and women’s empowerment. Gender equality is not only a basic human right, but its achievement has enormous socio-economic ramifications. Empowering women fuels thriving economies, spurring productivity and growth. Yet gender inequalities remain deeply entrenched in every society. Women lack access to decent work and face occupational segregation and gender wage gaps. They are too often denied access to basic education and health care. Women in all parts of the world suffer violence and discrimination. They are under-represented, and we are here to represent them.
Our Logo
The myth of Medusa is arguably one of the most well-known stories, becoming a common sight in popular culture as well as a key symbol for Western feminist movements.
Tattoos of Medusa have become a symbol of strength for survivors of sexual assault, inverting the narrative that women should be punished for their victimhood. Our logo represents our support for victims of sexual assault and we aim to make their voices heard.
What our Name Stands for:
The name is inspired by a Play by Sophocles- a greek writer. It’s an Athenian tragedy that follows Antigone- a feminist hero before the word feminism, or the assertion that women are equal to men, even existed. She stands up for what she believes is right, even though it means surrendering her life. Her name in Greek means 'one who is of the opposite opinion' (anti = opposite, gnomi = opinion).
